Historic Washington Park

Bounded by Broadway east to University Boulevard, and Alameda Avenue south to Evans Avenue, the Washington Park neighborhood surrounds the beautiful and popular Washington Park. The neighborhood is made up of historic Victorian architecture and classic bungalows, most of them built from 1900 to 1940, set back from tree-lined streets. The neighborhood gradually began to develop in the 1860's around a buffalo wallow that later became Smith Lake in today's park, becoming South Denver in 1886 - Denver's first suburb. Economic hard times forced the area to annex to Denver in the mid 1890's. Middle class desire to get out of "the city" spurred growth in the area after the turn of the century. Today, the park provides popular recreational activities and the neighborhood is abundant with a wide variety of restaurants, coffee houses, and shops.
