The Ellis-Schenck Mansion was built in 1890 by renowned Denver Architect, William Lang, for Carlton Ellis, a real estate broker who helped to develop the town of Berkeley. Ellis had also commissioned William Lang to build thirty-five houses for the Berkeley area. As many as fifteen of them still remain standing today.

After living in the property for 5 years or less, Ellis sold his home to Charles Meigs Schenck and moved into another William Lang home at 3885 Wolff Street in Berkeley. Schenck lived in the home until his death in 1933. He was a well known and powerful business man, both locally and nationally.

Lang's output during his years in Denver was truly prodigious. His career began in 1886 and ended with his untimely death in 1897. He designed over 250 buildings during in that short time. They ranged in complexity from simple cottages to elaborate mansions. Although the true number of these houses is not accurately reflected in Denver building records, their style is so distinctive that after the large number in the Berkeley and Broadway Terrace subdivisions in Denver is studied, the same design can be seen throughout the city.

Lang's quintessential style was the Richardson Romanesque with unusual embellishment. Considered individually, the embellishments would seem outrageous, but they all worked well together and added a restlessness and life to the buildings making them seem to squirm on their foundations and propel their owners on their next adventure. To the standard Richardsonian design was added turrets of carved stone, gargoyles and stone of various colors. Among Lang's best known works in Denver are The Molly Brown House and Castle Marne.

The owners that followed Charles Meigs Schenck have all loved the home. The present owner has been in the property since 1998. The house has been lovingly restored to its present day splendor.
