Real Estate on Capitol Hill

Homes for sale in Capitol Hill Denver CO Neighborhood. Colorado historian Dr. Thomas Noel tells us that architect William Lang specialized in designing stone mansions for Denver’s elite. He built castle-like Romanesque residences, bulging with turrets and towers. Lang also designed more modest, middle class, Queen Anne-style homes, such as the Molly Brown House. Eclectic and Neoclassical style homes in the area. John Smith’s City Ditch brought water to the parched region from the Platte River through South Denver. The dry, dusty city flourished with trees and lawns. Brown constructed the Brown Palace Hotel at 17th, Broadway, and Tremont in 1892. The area is made up of a wide variety of architectural styles, and mansions shared the block with more modest middle-class homes. Some of the original farmers who had homesteaded there also shared the neighborhood with the elite.

There are no old wooden buildings in the Capitol Hill area. After a disastrous fire in 1863, the government forbade the construction of wooden structures, a ban that stood until after World War II. They replaced in the late 1890’s by cablecars, which made Capitol Hill an attractive neighborhood for middle-class workers who commuted to downtown. Before the arrival of the streetcar, many people assumed that Denver could not expand any farther than it already had. In the fear that Denver was running out of space, many 19th century middle-class homes were built almost touching each other.

Capitol Hill Community Amenities

Young people gather along the same sidewalks where Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassidy. Along with other young bohemians, artists and musicians frequented the area’s coffee houses, bars, and art houses. But, among the historic homes are favorite restaurants and nightclubs, retail districts, and modern lofts and apartments. Denver’s walkable Golden Triangle neighborhood is one of the city’s many burgeoning arts districts — perfect places for a day of gallery hopping. Anchored by the Denver Art Museum and the Clyfford Still Museum, a dozen or so galleries there’s plenty to see in this corner of Denver.
