Bounded by 6th Avenue, Broadway, Mississippi Avenue, and the Platte River. In the 1860s, a party including William Byers (founder of the Rocky Mountain News) who arrived with the Gold Rush, platted about seventy-five percent of the farmland that would become Baker’s lots. Byers wife was the eighth white woman in Denver. After an 1864 flood, they built a wooden bridge over Cherry Creek, and in 1871 farmer Thomas Skerritt dragged a log behind a wagon from his farm (at now Hampden) to the Cherry Creek crossing, creating Broadway. Printer John Daily, potato farmer Rufus Clark, and William Byers planted twenty-five blocks of shade trees along the new street.
The Denver Circle Railroad entered Baker in 1881, making the area more attractive to workers and their families. In 1883, Denver annexed land south to Alameda Avenue, most of the Baker community. In 1894, it added the remainder. By the 1890s, it was an attractive neighborhood for the middle class. Architecture included elegant Queen Anne’s, sturdy Denver Squares, and stately Dutch Colonial Revivals, amid lovely gardens and tree-lined streets. Nearer Broadway were the homes of the social elite; more modest houses were toward the west. Cable cars ran on Broadway, along with elegant carriages, horseback riders, and bicycles. Along Santa Fe were small businesses and manufacturing. Early residents were Cornwall miners, Germans, and Danes.
Following the Panic of 1893, hotels, department stores, banks and manufacturers began to replace the elegant homes on Broadway. By 1911, streetcars lines wound through the Baker neighborhood, making it a convenient home for workers. The area developed and became more industrialized during the 1920’s and 1940’s. Lumber and brickyards moved in. Many longtime residents of Baker moved to Washington Park across Broadway. As potential customers sped down Broadway to the suburbs, business on Broadway declined.
