African American History in Curtis Park

Denver’s African American Community has a proud history dating back to pioneer miners, cowboys and railroaders. Blacks have able leaders, ranging from Barney Ford in the pioneer era to Wellington Webb, who became Denver’s first black mayor in 1992. The area south of Welton had become a popular black community, Five Points, by the end of World War I.

Five Points got its name from the intersection of 26th Avenue, 27th Street, and Welton Street. The bustling commercial district on Welton was a frequent stopover for the world’s premier African-American jazz musicians–including Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton, and countless others–who stopped on their way between midwest and west coast tours to play in Five Points clubs and performance halls. Many of them stayed at the historic Rossonian Hotel, which still stands today.

Since the ’80s and 90’s, an influx of middle-class Anglos have moved into the neighborhood by the old Victorians and their staircases and manteled fireplaces. The newcomers not only appreciate the architecture but the friendly, lively and diverse atmosphere. Small businesses have also discovered the historic district and helped to boost the economy. The tree-lined streets feature a broad variety of historic housing styles, and residents value its social, economic and ethnic diversity. Turn-of-the-century mansions overlook modest homes built by immigrant workers who came during the city’s early years.
